Last time on brand focus, we took you through the history behind Castelli, and looked at what made them the brand they are today. This time, we will be taking a look at Sportful, the Italian brand with a wide range of cycling clothing available.
Sportful is a new, fresh angle on cycling, aiming to bring the fun back into the sport and celebrate the experience as a passion, a moment and a journey as much as a goal, a race and a professional sport.
History and heritage/brand philosophy
Few brands breathe a breath of fresh air into cycling as much as Sportful does. Their philosophy on sport is uplifting and joyous, describing their brand as a lifestyle:
‘Sportful has always meant passion for sports.’, and ‘Running, riding […] are all things we do when we manage to steal a free moment […] Then we get together, exchange impressions, opinions, suggestions – in other words, we share our experience. The experience we have wearing Sportful.’
It is uncommon to see cycling companies or even sports companies promoting this optimistic and inclusive message, and it’s what makes the brand great, we can really feel the passion in the way they deliver their products. But the company wasn’t always like this, Sportful started its life back in 1946, in the form of a family owned knitwear factory. The Manifattura Valcismon factory started to produce high-end underwear garments, and began to create its niche there. When Dr. Giordano Cremonese took over the business from his parents, he introduced the idea of ski-wear production to the company after realising he had none, and from the early seventies, the company then began to develop these garments as their own. Skip to the mid-eighties, and with the ski gear a complete success, the Sportful brand began to move into cycling clothing and had great success in that area ever since.
What we know them for…
Many of us cyclists will instantly recognise the famous yellow and blue colours of the Tinkoff-Saxo racing team. Sportful have long been a provider of team kits for team Tinkoff-Saxo, and we regularly see them in the big summer tours such as: le Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España. With riders such as Jesús Hernández, Alberto Contador and Jay McCarthy, Team Tinkoff-Saxo are well equipped going into the 2014 season.
