MTB shoes come in a variety of styles so it's important to understand which style you need as a rider.Clipless shoes (where you clip into the pedal) are the most popular style of shoes for riding off-road. They increase your power transfer and create a strong connection between you and your bike. Stiff nylon or carbon soles improve pedalling efficiency and are ideal for all-round mountain bikers who ride on a variety of terrains such as trials, woods and cross-country routes. For aggressive downhill, Enduro and Trail riding you'll need flat-pedal mountain bike shoes that are available both with and without SPD attachments. Flat-pedal shoes without SPD attachments are ideal if you're looking for a well-built shoe with a grippy, stiff sole and decent protection but don't want to have to clip into your pedals.
What shoes you choose will determine what style of pedal system you need. Check out our MTB pedals page which includes the very best flat and SPD pedals.
