excellent pedal for beginner and very affordable, highly recommended...

Good Beginner Pedal

I have been using these for about 3 months with R087 shoes now and as most people these are my first clip less pedals. I am mostly a commuter so I'm not sure what the difference would be to use more expensive Shimano pedals. Overall they have been performing okay I just have two comments. My foot seems to be somewhat loose while clipped in even with tightened tension (I'm at about 50% tension) and second thing which is annoying is that the left pedal is creating this clicking noise for the second time. First time I was able to fix it by tightening the pedal a bit. So these things have me wondering if I should try the more expensive pedal next time around hoping for a more quality.

Nice starter

The R540's are a very basic looking pedal that does the right job for a road/commuter bike. Depending on the cleats you can buy (extras sold separately) you can choose more or less float

I really like shimano pedals, I have r540 that i bought first, going from SPD to a platform that does not point press in the middle of the foot: I put more than 15 000 km without any meticulous maintenance.
Plastic and metal are scuffed from 4 pairs of cleats, but I still prefer them on my commuter bike.

OK...but buy elsewhere

At €50 for a set of 'beginner pedals'...look elsewhere.
I had me a set (Boxed incl cleats) for £30 from another online retailer. In all honestly I'd be better spending the extra €17 for 105 model. I already have 6700 on my 'best' bike...and have no issues with them.
The 540's are a bit heavy, don't click in as well, tension is adjustable, but for some reason I don't feel as secure. Seems to be more float in the cheaper version (SH 11 cleats fitted on both shoes). Maybe that's the difference...beginner's bail out option???
Still they'll do for over the winter, no sense ruining more expensive pedals...cos it's gonna be a wet one...

great pedal, affordable price

This is the first pedal i ever bought, and it has performed really well. the adjustable tension on the clipping in/out is really good, and the pedals are very solid. a bit on the heavier side, but for this price, you are getting a great pedal

great pedal, affordable price

This is the first pedal I ever bough for my road bike, and it has been very good. The performance of it has been fantastic, and the adjustable tension for clipping in is helpful. Pedal is a little heavier, but for this price, it is a great deal

Amazing pedals!

These were my first SPD-SL pedals and besides being a little heavy they worked amazingly well.

The first 2 things you should know when starting to use these is that they are supposed to hang vertically when not clipped in. That is they way they are designed. You have to push them down with your foot as you clip in. I didn't know this at first and kept thinking I had to get them parallel to the ground then clip in.

Also, do NOT go lower than the lowest tension setting as it will mess up the pedals. There are 4 clicks per turn and 3 total turns. So in total there are 12 clicks you can work through. The indicator on the back also lets you know if you are close to the lowest tension.

Great Value

I rather like the SPD-SL series of road pedals. The offer a secure, wide platform and the cleats have bottom surfaces that make walking on hard surfaces less of an adventure than with many other cleat systems. About the only thing I don't like about them is that they're rather heavy.

If you'd like to try SPD-SL pedals, this is the place to start. Save for using a plastic cover plate instead of a metal cover plate, they are mechanically identical to the much more expensive 105 and Ultegra pedals (check out the technical data from Shimano if you're sceptical). They also weigh about the same. But they cost much, much less and have the same smooth bearings.

And consider this ... when these pedals are on sale, they cost you only a little more than a set of SPD-SL replacement cleats (which come with the R540s). That makes buying them a true no-brainer.

Good beginners pedal

Does the trick! Using this pedal is easy to get the hang of, since it goes off either way. Not the best quality, but since the price is set accordingly it a winner!

PBK has set a nice price for it =)
