  • Description

The SRAM Rival® OCT (Open Core Technology)™ Crankset shows the way forward for any serious cyclist, putting power to the road while saving weight at the same time. Open Core Technology means the crank arms are hollow-forged out of AL-6066 alloy for maximum strength and mount our PowerGlide™ 10 speed chainrings.

    Features:

    • OCT™construction is stronger and lighter than standard solid-core alloy cranks
    • PowerGlide™ chainrings are competition proven with long-lasting finishes

    GXP

GXP’s Gutter Seal design cuts friction and weight—improving both feel and performance.

    OCT (Open Core Technology)

To fabricate our Open Core Technology a single mass of premium alloy is pushed, pulled and squeezed into a hollow crank arm. During our exclusive process the magic happens, producing supreme strength while remaining weight-conscious. We may have not been the first to fabricate hollow crank arms, but we are the best by yielding the highest stiffness-to-weight ratio out there. Our OCT cranks are stiffer, stronger, and lightweight beyond any solid forged crankset and when we use our AL-7050-TV to fabricate with OCT the results are impressive.

    Pressfit 30

This is a new design led by SRAM. It’s all the best from BB30 and Press-Fit bottom brackets in one captivating package. This bottom bracket is designed for 30mm spindle cranksets. The key difference with PressFit 30 is how the bearings are fitted into the frame. Bearings are housed in nylon cups which will be pressed into the frames bottom bracket shell. PressFit 30 will feature an integrated seal, pre-assembled into the cups, to further prolong bearing life. Frames will need a 46mm inner-diameter bottom bracket shell to accommodate this system. PressFit 30 for road will require a 68mm wide shell while PressFit 30 for MTB will require a 73mm wide shell. Advantages: Huge weight savings, narrow Q-factor, more ankle clearance, greater bearing durability, stiffer/stronger crank construction, simple installation. Allows for larger diameter frame tubes increasing frame stiffness. Drawbacks: Still searching.

Latest version

Looks really good on the bike, changes are very quick and precise, streets ahead of my old FSA Gossamer. Using it with Sram Apex changers and 1050 cassette and chain, absolute joy to ride, smooth and silent, can really put the power down now. But note that the picture is of the old version, I received the current version as per the Sram website, which looks different (better) and comes with the alloy BB rather than the black one. It's a standard 68mm English thread, no need for spacers on a road bike, straightforward fit with a Hollowtech socket and an 8mm hex for the crank, both on a torque wrench of course. I'm finding myself a gear or two higher than before and big-big and small-small have become realistic options when hills go wrong, although not exactly the ideal way to do it of course!

SRAM Quality

I picked this set up for a rebuild project on an old Bianchi steel frame. The BB fit perfectly in the old 1" English threaded shell without any difficulty. The crankset is light for alloy, and the chainrings that came on mine are the later, stiffer design with fewer cutouts (unlike those in the photo). The material and finish quality are consistent with the other components in the SRAM Rival groupset and will not disappoint. If weight is a major concern I'd recommend a carbon crankset but if you're not too fussy about a few extra grams these deliver excellent value for the money.

excellent

I have these in 53/39, they look the business and are stiff as anything, recommended

Rival Chainset

PBK seemed to be the only supplier who had a Compact 165m Rival Chainset in stock. A good chainset with very durable chainwheels.

Good Mid-Range Crankset

Having recently upgraded my winter bike's groupset from Shimano to a combination of Force and Rival, I would suggest this crankset is well worth considering. Whilst not the lightest or heaviest it is, in my opnion, a good price of kit for those wet and dirty winter rides where your bike gets a good work from the elements. I am also a big fan of Sram; I love the double tap system which allows easy gear shifting rom both the hoods and the drops.
