It's been at least 20 years since i bought my last bike computer and they have come a long way in that time! I'm impressed with the solid link to the hr monitor strap and the speed sensor, not so fond of the gps speed though as occasionally I am going very fast whilst sitting still on my doorstep. ..! Waterproof wise this unit should outcast my older cateye that it is replacing. The screen is easy to read in full sunlight, just don't put too much data up at the same time... I found the operating system simple to understand and being a typical male I didn't even read the instructions - well not straight away.. Fix the static gps and add wifi upload via cell phone link and this would be 5 stars - add yes I know the 510 does the wifi but I don't want a colour touchscreen.

Edge500, worth so much more

Have been running this little beast for years now. Never let me down once. Clear presentation of all the data you could possibly want and a lot more than you need. If you don't need directions, and who does, this will record absolutely everything you do in the saddle. Its light, easy to fit, easy to read, easy to set up and covers all angles. Upload your records to the local software and analyse it, or just wonder at the effort you expended. Have looked at the 510, even the 800/810 and in reality cannot find a use for the additional gadgetry/gimmicks and expense so will probably replace this one when if ever gives up the ghost. Simply brilliant

Compact and easy to use, quality product, worth every cent.

I have been using my Garmin 500 for over a year now after trying previously using a a Polar computer. My coach lives at the other end of the country and I download my training sessions from the Garmin to a website and he analyses the information of my ride. The Garmin is much more user friendly than the Polar that you really needed to carry the manual with it in case you pushed the wrong button. I only spent a short amount of time setting up the Garmins 3 display screens which was surprisingly easy and I can easily rotate the display screens during my ride to find whatever info I need. The bike setup was easy. The computer unit itself mounts well and is tough. The screen is still like new and I place it in a small soft lined case whenever I transport my bike. Charging up the unit is great using either your computer or a separate power charger. Worth every cent.

great unit!

I ditched my polar unit - had ongoing battery issues which was very frustrating, I picked up this Garmin 500 had never looked back.
This is a brilliant product and works so efficiently.
pre setting different screen options is a great feature allowing you to focus on attention parameters.
500 has it all, and it works!
The only down side is if you display a lot of information it can be hard to see.
If your looking for a new toy that changes the way you ride then pick up one of these!!

totally worth it!

The Garmin 500 is a great unit for a cyclist. It is easy to use, with plenty of screen options. It is a good size and it transfers easily between bikes. Which is great if you are like me and have a number of bicycles you ride throughout the week.

I bought another speed sensor and some extra bike mounts and transfer my main unit between three bikes. So I have plenty of data to upload to Garmin Connect or I use a program called Golden Cheetah which is free and connects easily with the Garmin 500.

GREAT PRODUCT, GREAT PRICE

This is by far the best cycling computer that I have used and I have tried them all (blackburn, polar, sigmasport, cat eye). The device is very easy to use and set up.

The Garmin Connect is also a great site to analyze your workout- all in all I think that Garmin hit a homerun with this computer.

My only complaint, which is nit picking is that the temp is not always accurate. If you are riding on country roads with out much canopy, it will read hot. I dont know how much a thermometer on a bike computer is really necessary anyway so I dont worry about it.

Great unit - a must have

I brought this unit on sale over the easter weekend and am amazed at the ease of set up/use and the reliability of the tracking. This unit has heaps of useful features allowing you to race yourself over a previous ridden course and prepare workouts prior to going out for a ride.
A great training tool.

This Garmin Edge 500 has plenty of features with such a small design.
I previously owned a Garmin Forerunner 205 for running and when I got into cycling I used this on the bike. Now having upgraded to the Edge I am finding the information I now get back from a ride is all I need. Its a great training tool as you can set up your own course and race yourself. I use this feature quite a bit. The only thing it is missing that I use to use on the Forerunner is the Map feature but I am guessing they have left this feature off this model so that you buy the Edge 800.
So if you don't want the maps feature I highly recommend buying this computer as it has loads of information to throw at you.

Must read if you choosing between Edge 500 and Edge 800

I would have given the 500 five stars, but now 4 because I own both units - Edge 500 and Edge 800.

The obvious difference between 800 and this 500 is size, colour screen and map (if you purchase one). Bigger screen means easier to read at high speed or intensive efforts. I found myself difficult to gather info when I have a screen displaying more than 5 items on the 500. This is now not a problem for my 800.

What I did not know before upgrading is that I can change the screen configuration with more ease in the 800. I just press and hold on screen of the 800 - a pop up menu will come and the data will be categorized. I have not checked the latest firmware update of the 500. Last time I checked there is no categorisation of the data so finding the one you have to go through the entire menu of nearly 100.

The 800 also has a stronger GPS reception capability and the unit starts up much quicker. Beneficial if you are in a hurry to meet your riding buddies.

Map may be handy. Not just for navigation, but looking at the road ahead and seeing where the end of that stupid hill is.

Is the above worth the 150 quid premium over 500? May be not. My 500 never missed a beat. It is so robust that the unit still works after I dropped it so many times!

500 is also the unit of choice for the Garmin team. I think it is the 40 gram difference in unit weight. Except for big Thor who likes the 800 to boost his ego (just kidding) ^^"!

You ask worth GPS data collecting at all!? What?! Data collecting to compare your ride on a climb is a huge motivation for training! Get into GPS data collecting and upload your data in a few website available. Beat your mate up a climb. Be King of a mountain!
