fantastic gadget
4Best investment, all the functions work well and there are no unnecessary wires hanging off your bike. The Garmin connect is also a great way to summarise and compare all your work outs. Well worth the money.

I used to have an Oregon 450T combined with a Polar CS200 on my handle bar to have all the information i wanted, but with the Edge 500, I get everything I need.
And for those who are wondering what HRM chest strap is comming with the bundle; it's the premium one which is really comfortable.
Combined with the training center software or the garmin connect web site you get a lot of information for performance analysis.

Simply the best computer I have used

If you have not tried GPS you must get one of these. Packed with features and a customisable screen this is a very versatile unit. Adding to this is the Garmin connect web based logging of all of your rides, profiles, routes etc. I got this in a neutral scheme and then added the Garmin HR belt and the speed/cadence sensor (rather than go for the blue or Garmin team unit which does not go with my bikes colour schemes). Another bonus of this unit is that it comes with 2 stem/bar mounts so you can switch between two bikes. This enabled me to go from 2 unit to one Garmin unit.
Having been riding for 15 years and seen the transition from cable to wireless and then heart rate - this is the biggest leap forward in features and feedback in one little unit!

Great product, provides more than enough information
4Much like any avid cyclist I have been through a few cycle-computers over the years. This by far is the best one I have ever used. Provides the rider with the vital info and more if you so desire. A plus to this device is that gone is the magnet from the front wheel and the sensor as well, not having to worry about gap between sensor and magnet is so nice. Being able to use it for more than one bike is a plus. The one minor negative thing about the Garmin 500 is that sometimes the percent grade is not the most accurate. It still provides more than enough information though.

Great Product, Awesome battery life, so many functions!

Seriously, what can't this thing do? Everything you will ever think of is possible with this and the GPS is connecting in about 5-10 seconds and you're ready to go!
The only downsides are when the temperature is close to zero or under, the grade indicator can get quite impressive, It went over 999% on a flat road for about a minute then went back to normal and the thermometer isn't always working properly.
Overall, it's pricy but it is awesome, everything works well except the thermometer which is nothing compared to all the advantages.

Must read if you choosing between Edge 500 and Edge 800

I would have given the 500 five stars, but now 4 because I own both units - Edge 500 and Edge 800.
The obvious difference between 800 and this 500 is size, colour screen and map (if you purchase one). Bigger screen means easier to read at high speed or intensive efforts. I found myself difficult to gather info when I have a screen displaying more than 5 items on the 500. This is now not a problem for my 800.
What I did not know before upgrading is that I can change the screen configuration with more ease in the 800. I just press and hold on screen of the 800 - a pop up menu will come and the data will be categorized. I have not checked the latest firmware update of the 500. Last time I checked there is no categorisation of the data so finding the one you have to go through the entire menu of nearly 100.
The 800 also has a stronger GPS reception capability and the unit starts up much quicker. Beneficial if you are in a hurry to meet your riding buddies.
Map may be handy. Not just for navigation, but looking at the road ahead and seeing where the end of that stupid hill is.
Is the above worth the 150 quid premium over 500? May be not. My 500 never missed a beat. It is so robust that the unit still works after I dropped it so many times!
500 is also the unit of choice for the Garmin team. I think it is the 40 gram difference in unit weight. Except for big Thor who likes the 800 to boost his ego (just kidding) ^^"!
You ask worth GPS data collecting at all!? What?! Data collecting to compare your ride on a climb is a huge motivation for training! Get into GPS data collecting and upload your data in a few website available. Beat your mate up a climb. Be King of a mountain!
