The new SRAM Red components have been designed with the twin goals of eliminating the superfluous while focusing on an overall synergy. This is a new groupset with a fresh new approach to everything, 6 brand new components make the new SRAM Red the pinnacle of road racing technology.
The new SRAM RED Powerdome X cassettes eight cogs in the middle are machined from a single block of high grade tool steel, increasing stiffness while weighing even less than a titanium cassette. Between each cog in the block is a StealthRing elastomer to reduce vibration and noise.
Please note that the new SRAM Red 2012 cassette will work with all previous SRAM Road groupsets.

Much of the reduced sound level from the drivetrain is result of the newly designed cassette body. The middle 8 cogs are still machined out of a piece of steel (which is lighter and stiffer than titanium) while the outer cogs are aluminum, but they’ve done a couple things which have improved shift quality and reduced the noise level significantly. The cog teeth have been designed to load, transition, and unload the chain in a way that reduces noise by reducing surface contact at certain points between the chain and the cogs. Then add in what SRAM call their “StealthRing elastometers between each cog, to further reduce the noise level. The StealthRings are actually a slightly larger diameter than outer cog next to it, so these elastometers contact the chain before the actual cogs do when the cogs pick up the chain – so the impact of the chain engaging the cog is reduced, and therefore less noisy. In essence – they cushion the landing of the chain onto each cog.

I had the og1090 cassette and thought it was brilliant but damaged it so needed a new one. After worrying about the price of this cassette I finally bought one and I am glad I did. The old red cassette was reasonably quiet but this is silent, also I find the shifts up and down are smoother and crisper than the old red. As an added bonus it is even lighter and looks fantastic although I think it will be a lot harder to keep clean. When I bought this I also bought a new chain because pbk were offering 25% off if you bought both together which brought the price down a bit, although after using it I would buy another at full price if I had to.
