Great stiif shoe with lots of room

The Shimano R170 Road Shoe has been described by some as the best road shoe for the price, but being someone who hasn’t ridden every shoe out there I can’t go that far. I can tell you this is the shoe I purchased when replacing my old (and I mean old) Comp shoes. If you’re like me, spending a few hundred dollars is a big commitment, so you are careful when you’re buying something new. The payoff for the price of these shoes is huge. How they fit? The Shimano R170 (what’s with the name?) really suit me perfectly, and if you’re someone who has a large foot and needs a large toe box, this might be the shoe for you. I tried a number of other brands , but my toes felt crowded. Slipping on the Shimano’s feel natural and comfortable and there is plenty of room for my fat toes. Compared to my old shoes, which had laces and Velcro straps and were cumbersome to get in to, the R170’s are a treat. You’ll slip in easily and the two bottom straps hold your foot firmly. The added top strap has a ratchet and click system that can easily be tightened or loosened… even when you’re on the road. I never feel cramped when wearing the shoes and I actually forget I'm wearing them. Which for a cycling shoe is a good thing. When purchasing any shoe I also want them to feel like they’re not going to come off, which is the case with the R170. The heel cup holds you securely and comfortably. For me, these shoes look great! I am a minimalist and I love the simplistic white and black design. Face it, you love to ride, but you want to look good while you do it too. These shies look great! Weighing in at 295 grams (weight will vary with shoe size), my research tells me they are heavier than some shoes, but also cost far less. Is paying twice as much for a shoe a decent payoff to save 40 or 50 grams? Not for me, I’d rather lose the weight, but you can make that decision yourself. Made from a firm material, the shoe is solid and easy to clean. Several sections of mesh allow air to flow, plus there is a vent in the toe section of the sole to cool your tootsies. The insole is a firm cushion-like material that feels great on your feet. The sole itself is a carbon fiber composite and it is plenty stiff. Shimano rates it at 10 on the stiffness scale, which is as high as the scale goes. The shoe will take pretty much any cleat and there is lots of adjustment on the shoe. Moving from my old shoes to these was a real eye opener. Fit, comfort, style and performance are all enhanced with the R170. I noticed I could move the cleat back further on the Shimano shoes than on my old model and the transfer of power is noticeable. They do take some getting used to, but that is understandable after riding with other shoes for many years. Even then the transition doesn't take long. If you’re like me, you want your feet to stay cool when you ride. I never feel like my feet are overheating on long summer rides and in cooler weather they stay warm enough. The airflow seems fine with the R170 and my feet are always comfortable. Shoe covers fit nicely over the Shimano's. Overall a massive improvement for me. If you’ve been holding out on new shoes for years, maybe it’s time to buy something new. I would highly recommend the Shimano R170’s. They feel great, have plenty of room for wide feet, perform admirably and are an excellent buy. The most important thing is to find the shoe that works for you. The Shimano R170 might be it. You never know, a new shoe might be the best thing you can do for your rides this cycling season.

Great shoes

Bought this after quite a long research on what I should get around this price bracket. Previously used a pair of Shimano M088 mountain bike shoes. Wow, what a difference. The power transfer is instant and therefore increase my speed. Plus they are not as difficult to walk in too. I also found that it is also much easier to clip in and out of the Shimano R550 pedal. Highly recommended. If only it is available in black.

Comfort

I suffer badly from hot foot and have struggled to find shoes that are light enough and have enough air flow to counter the problem. The Shimano R170 shoes suit the purpose well. I have tried many other brands, but none have come close to the comfort level on these shoes.

What a fit!

After wearing out my Bonts, I was looking at the R320s, but these fit so well right out of the box that it was too easy not to spend more. The fit is snug around the midfoot and heel, a bit wider than average in the forefoot, with a firm hold around the instep and a roomy toe box--sort of like Specialized but better, and without the built-in varus wedge. Shimano's Dynalast fit is amazing.

Shimano R170 Shoes

Recently received these shoes, upgrading from a set of Shimano shoes that were over three years old. I had tried some other brands of shoes on and Shimano seems consistently the most comfortable brand so I stuck with them. The R170s are much lighter and hence I feel lighter and faster. They are very comfortable like my prior shoes were. However when I kneeled over on them the plastic front cracked which is not cool.
