R171

Best shoes I've ever had both wide and super comfy. Sole is stiff as they come. Fantastic value, no need to look any further than these for a top drawer racing shoe.

Wide FeeProb

I will preface this, I’m not a great cyclist and do to a busy work schedule I get most of my miles in commuting and doing the odd charity ride during the summer. These Shimano R171 shoes are replacing a well-worn set of cheap Shimano R087 shoes which to date have been my only clipless shoes. That being said I can only compare these two shoes as it is all I’ve ever owned. Construction: For their price the R087 are a very well made and durable shoe, the material choices in the R171 and heads and shoulders in looks above the R087. The stitching and general construction seem to be similar between the two. The exterior sole on the R171 is notably stiffer and contoured to the shape of the foot more so than the R087 which feels flat and board like in comparison. The exterior of the sole on the R171 is covered in a thick paint like coating, if you happen to walk on loose stone or gravel it will tear or scratch the coating leaving the ivory substrate showing. Purely cosmetic but the sole of my right shoe just in front of the heel pad which spends more time on the ground at stop lights is looking very knackered. It is no worse than the R087, that shoe just hides it bettered do the homogenous nature of the plastic sole. Fit: When I bought the R087 I tried on 46 and 47 sized shoes in the store, the 46 was the correct length but I bought the 47 since I deed the width. I took a chance having never tried on a 46 wide from Shimano and ordered it assuming if they didn't fit I could sell them off. These fit wonderfully, they are basically 46 fit long and 47 fit wide. On the R087 I was always cranking down the ankle ratchet to prevent fore and aft movement of the foot. On the R171 I simply adjust things to snug and it conforms and holds the foot. I used to get some toe numbness on rides in excess of 40 miles with my old shoes and all I can say is it did not occur with the one 50 mile ride I have done so far in the new shoes. They required no breaking in and have been wonderful to date. Things to note: Venting, we are not into the hot summer months as of yet but these don’t breathe as much as the old R087. At about 40 degrees Fahrenheit I can ride the R171 with normal socks and no toe covers. At the same temp I need at least toe covers with the R087 and preferable thicker socks, venting looks similar but the breeze just doesn’t penetrate the new shoe like the old one. I love these new shoes and plan riding them into the ground, I would highly recommended them.

Wide Shimano R171

Definitely wide shoes. Wider than Giro HV shoes.

Great shoes

I need EE or EEEE shoes and have been using Sidi Megas for the last ten years so buying these was abit of a gamble. I have no regrets. They are great. Stiffer and lighter than the Megas and just as comfortable.
