100% rubber "tape", but I really like it!
This bar tape is not what I expected, but I like it, and would recommend it. The description is inaccurate, which is why I'm only giving this 4 stars. But I'm pleased with the product itself, and will buy another pack for future use. It's unlike any other bar tape I've ever used in the past! The material is described as a "thermoplastic elastomer" that's "washable". What this means is: a long strip of solid rubber with a moulded texture on one side. It's described as "lightweight", but it's actually a bit heavier than standard foam bartape. It's described as "tacky feel", but it's not as tacky as other soft-touch tapes I've used in the past. And it's not as good as other tapes at providing grip in wet conditions. But because it's rubber, you can easily set the tension while wrapping, and the tension in the rubber determines the grip level. The 2.5mm of cushioning is a bit misleading, as the rubber is quite dense, so doesn't offer as much cushion as I was expecting. I was installing this tape on a gravel bike build, so I put a few strips of the old foam tape under the main contact points before wrapping with this rubber tape to add a bit of extra plushness. It was really, really easy to wrap! The easiest I've ever used. The rubber has a lot of stretch to it, so you can get the perfect amount of tension with each turn of the wrap without tearing it. There's no adhesive on the back of the rubber, so if you get a turn of the wrap slightly out of place, it's very straightforward to unwrap, and re-do. The black colour I bought had a small amount of talcum powder on it (presumably left over from manufacturing, or to aid in longevity during storage). Because it's rubber, it cleans/washes up really easily. After a muddy ride, a hose down will get it 100% clean again. It also doesn't absorb any water, meaning it won't build up salt after being used on a turbo trainer. Unlike other tapes I've bought, this doesn't come with two smaller segments to put under the shifters to ensure the entire bar area is covered with tape, but because of the stretchy rubber material, I was able to get the whole bar covered without these extra pieces. And you could always snip a little off the end to use if needed.
Worst bar tape
This bar tape is nothing more than a strip of slick rubber ribbon. It provides close to no cushion (very thin and doesnt compress under grip). It is SUPER slippery... As soon as your hands get slightly moist it becomes very hard to keep a grip. Hands are sliding all over the handlebars to the point where it becomes dangerous in case of an emergency braking or swerving maneuver. I took the tape right off after my first ride. 1 star because it is stretchy and adheres well to the bars (even with the lack of back sticky liner).
