Gravel is nothing new. Ever since those first Tour de France contenders rode across scarcely carved alpine tracks over a century ago, gravel riding has been a well-ingrained component of cycling culture. However, while it's always been a part of riding a bike, until recently, gravel had only been an extension of road cycling or mountain biking – merely a patch of dirt that connected two pieces of tarmac, or two single-track trails. Now, it's the main event.

For many, gravel isn't just another discipline; it embodies all the best things about riding a bike – independence, exploration and adventure. With modern equipment and components that allow you to ride the path less pedalled, gravel riding is whatever you want it to be. It's a 200-mile race in Kansas, a multi-day bike-packing trip with your friends, and a way to clear your head and get some space in your local area. It's freedom.
