BIg Surprise

I bought this headset because I was bringing an old Italian steel frame into the 21st century by replacing the groupset and wheels. It previously had downtube shifters and I wanted modern shifters. I bought a Campagnolo groupset to stay in tune with the Italian frame, and Campagnolo wheels too. The headset on the bike was an old Shimano headset which I thought would be fine with just new bearings, but I couldn't find the right bearings because the headset was so old. So I decided to change the headset completely. I thought the Campagnolo headset was pretty expensive but when I looked at it in comparison to what I had already spent and then thought about the savings I had made I decided it wasn't so bad a cost in order to maintain the Campagnolo components throughout. I wasn't expecting much of a change really, maybe slightly smoother steering, but I really expected to not be able to tell any difference. Big surprise! Yes the steering does feel smoother, but it doesn't stop there, at speed going downhill I no longer get the nervous feelings when turning into a corner, I had thought that that was all in my head before, but there was something going on in the headset that obviously wasn't quite right. Also I cannot help having a huge smile every time I want a drink and sit up and take my hands off the bars, the bike previously felt twitchy and I was rocking my hips about constantly trying to maintain something near a straight line, I had always put this down to the mysteries of frame geometries. Now with this headset installed I think I could easily do my whole ride without touching the bars except for braking and changing gear, it holds a line perfectly, I can even take may hands off the bars with the bike on my rollers which I could never do before. I'm assuming that the changes in direction needed to maintain my balance are so small that they are not noticeable, whereas the old worn out headset just wouldn't move by such a small amount, it would stick and then move a longer way causing me to have to correct for that, hence my over-active hips. So this is a lesson learned for me, and I can wholeheartedly recommend this headset, I was expecting a better bike because of the group set and wheels (which I have definitely got) but the difference made by this headset was the biggest surprise of all.
