The Power of the Sun
The headline grabbing feature for this device is the Power Glass solar charging lens, which enables the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar to charge from the energy of the sun. In harnessing solar energy, the battery of this hi-tech device will last as long as even your biggest adventures. The built-in solar panels mean your device will charge on the go or even when you’re resting at the café. In optimal conditions you can expect up to 100 hours of charge; under typical use you can still expect an industry-leading 35–40 hours. Should you need to re-charge in a hurry, USB-C charging has been introduced to get you back on your bike as quickly as possible.
Upgrades and Endless Features
There’s been a number of other hardware and software upgrades from the previous iteration: the processing power has been boosted, so routes will load and calculate in seconds; there’s more-advanced mapping and navigation features; an intuitive user interface; and even an all-new aluminium locking mechanism to secure your device to your mount.
In addition to these state-of-the-art upgrades, Garmin have of course included the usual features you’d expect from a flagship bike computer like this. There’s a seemingly endless supply of training and performance metrics to display while out your bike and pore over in post-ride analysis on software like Garmin Connect.
Fully Customisable Profiles
The Garmin Edge 1040 will let you easily transfer over your old profiles, but there’s also endless possibilities for customizing new ones. You can opt for a variety of profiles for training, racing, commuting, mountain biking, or whatever else you like. Each screen can display up to ten data fields, so you’ll never be short of data to view.
Increased GPS Accuracy
The Edge 1040 Solar is more accurate than any of its predecessors. The American sports tech makers have added multi-band GNSS technology, which adds new levels of precision to the data recorded. So, when you’re out exploring parts unknown—in thick tree cover or dwarfed by Alpine mountains, for example—you can be confident you won’t be left scratching your head on whether to go left or right.
Post-Ride Analysis
For your post-ride analysis there’s a wealth of options. There’s the usual summary page, that outlines the typical aspects of a ride, such as length and time. But you can also see a summary of your achievements and personal records for a ride, the training impact and load, and recommended recovery time. What’s more, there’s a second page summarizing your routes, training effect, power data, nutrition and hydration data, among others.
And, of course, you can sync your ride with Garmin Connect, via Bluetooth or WiFi, and share this with Strava, Komoot, and a host of other third party apps.
Mapping and Navigation
The mapping and navigation software on the Edge 1040 Solar is truly market leading among bike computers. Using the device you can plot routes using Garmin’s popularity data, or you can upload routes from your choice of mapping app, be that Garmin Connect, Strava, Komoot, or whatever else. There’s now more points of interest than before and you can plot a route straight to them on the fly.
If you do stray from the course, you needn’t worry. The Edge 1040 will seamlessly bring you back on course.
Ascend to Greatness
As cyclists we both love and hate climbs. Garmin’s ClimbPro has possibly been one of the brand’s most successful features in recent years. Using ClimbPro, when you’re following a route, you’ll get the key information on the climbs coming up, including the length, gradient, total ascent, and much longer you have to reach the top. For pacing a PB or simply managing your effort, this is an incredibly helpful feature. In this device you can also add in custom Up Ahead way points, which allows you to set points on a route so you can see how far it is to a key point on your route.
Training And Performance
For those of you that want all the data, Garmin have delivered. Using Power Guide you can generate a training or race plans for a set course; identify your relative strengths on the bike with Cycling Ability; and get an idea for you have left in the tank with Real-Time Stamina, a predictor of how far you will be able to ride at a certain intensity.
