Obey...Maybe. Enjoy...Yes!

If you take your cycling seriously, you'll enjoy The Rules. It's a rich compendium of history, tradition, and respect for the sport's finest and toughest practitioners. And for all of that, it's well worth a read. You may not buy into it as the "only" way to practise cycling, but you'll enjoy the authors' views on the riders and traditions that really matter. And there's a vein of irony here that lightens the whole thing up, as well. You might even LOL in places!

Interesting, funny

PbK had this on special offer - and I enjoy reading cycling books. I'm enjoying reading this book in the smallest room in the house. It's American, so some references don't really seem relevant to the British Velominati (e.g. Regarding drinking strong beers rather than coffee) but mostly it's amusing and interesting. Occasional and unnecessary use of bad language detracts at times, hence 4 * rather than 5. A good birthday or Christmas present for the aspirant obsessive cyclist, recommended.

Must have book!

Great fun to read, and even better fun (if your riding mates have a copy) to banter over the different rules.

The Rules

If you ride you must know the rules. This book succinctly explains them with a great dash of humour.

A must for real cyclists

5

The Rules should be familiar to anyone with an appreciation of the sport and way of life that is cycling. I discovered them via the website. The book is well laid out, and explains each of the rules in detail. There will be plenty of debate about the rules, but I fully agree with all but a couple of them! One very minor gripe- the cover of the book (paperback) seems particularly flimsy, and it curls away from the pages of its own accord. It might be difficult to keep the book in good condition. This is a very entertaining read, and a book to dip in and out of for years to come.

Fun book, with some good rules

5

First, you have to accept that this book was written as a fun read. (Those that devotedly follow the rules may be offended by that, but what can you do...) Some of the rules are a bit extreme and over the top, but for the typical cyclist, it is still a good read. It's good for a few laughs, a few good stories, and some good ideas. I made a few changes based on the rules, other rules I ignored. For example, I stopped using my seat bag, but kept using my mirror. There's lot to read and think about. It's a relatively quick read too, but it's still good to keep around and randomly flip open to re-read random rules.

So much of this is true. Having ridden with all levels of riders this simply says it how it is. The unwritten laws of road cycling have now been documented. Get it.

The Rules?

3

An interesting book that covers 95 rules of cycling. Not one I would normally go out and buy off the shelf or online. After having read quite a way into it there are some interesting observations being made. Example Rule #11 Family does not come first. THE BIKE DOES. Rule #12 The correct number of bikes to own is n+1, where n = the number of bikes currently owned. I find it ideal to have it by the side of the chair and to be able to pick up and read as and when. The best part is that it came free from Probikekit with my last order. Thanks guys.
