great pedal, affordable price

This is the first pedal i ever bought, and it has performed really well. the adjustable tension on the clipping in/out is really good, and the pedals are very solid. a bit on the heavier side, but for this price, you are getting a great pedal

This is the first pedal I ever bough for my road bike, and it has been very good. The performance of it has been fantastic, and the adjustable tension for clipping in is helpful. Pedal is a little heavier, but for this price, it is a great deal

Amazing pedals!

These were my first SPD-SL pedals and besides being a little heavy they worked amazingly well.

The first 2 things you should know when starting to use these is that they are supposed to hang vertically when not clipped in. That is they way they are designed. You have to push them down with your foot as you clip in. I didn't know this at first and kept thinking I had to get them parallel to the ground then clip in.

Also, do NOT go lower than the lowest tension setting as it will mess up the pedals. There are 4 clicks per turn and 3 total turns. So in total there are 12 clicks you can work through. The indicator on the back also lets you know if you are close to the lowest tension.

Good basic pedals

Great pedals for beginners, but the plastic bits wear out and it's a mission to find. I went to a few bike shops to find the plastic bits and none stock them. They had to contact the rep to get them. It seems like I'm the only person to visit these shops to ask for these bits. By the way, if you don't replace the plastic bits when they wear out, you'll start wearing the aluminium on the pedal. Not good. I eventually change my pedals to PD-6700 with stainless steel bits. I don't have to worry when they are going to wear out now.

Great Value

I rather like the SPD-SL series of road pedals. The offer a secure, wide platform and the cleats have bottom surfaces that make walking on hard surfaces less of an adventure than with many other cleat systems. About the only thing I don't like about them is that they're rather heavy.

If you'd like to try SPD-SL pedals, this is the place to start. Save for using a plastic cover plate instead of a metal cover plate, they are mechanically identical to the much more expensive 105 and Ultegra pedals (check out the technical data from Shimano if you're sceptical). They also weigh about the same. But they cost much, much less and have the same smooth bearings.

And consider this ... when these pedals are on sale, they cost you only a little more than a set of SPD-SL replacement cleats (which come with the R540s). That makes buying them a true no-brainer.

Good beginners pedal

Does the trick! Using this pedal is easy to get the hang of, since it goes off either way. Not the best quality, but since the price is set accordingly it a winner!

PBK has set a nice price for it =)

Beginners pedal

4

These are my first set of spd-sl pedals. Initially I was apprehensive about using them, having come from the double sided spd pedals. I found the pedals easy to get into, with the large target area of the pedal helping with this. The only issue I had was with the pedal not returning to the correct hanging position when trying to clip in.

Admittedly I had a few stacks whilst getting used to the different unclipping mechanism. I also found the mechanism tighter than my previous spd's. Once used to it, I was fine.

I found the pedal extremely comfortable whilst riding, with no hot spots. With the floating cleats provided there's enough play to keep the knees fresh as well.

In terms of build quality, the pedals seem really well made, the bearings are smooth, the mechanism is adjustable and most importantly, they look really sleek on the bike :-) The cleats are also well designed and most importantly durable.

If you are a weight concious rider, you may find them a tad heavy.

Would recommend to any beginner :-)

Just OK

Hmmm just on the borderline for Shimano's usual quality. They can develop a bit of slop early on and hard to tighten up or get the bushings/bearings to come good again (i.e. repack). Good beginner pedal

great starter pedals

These pedals were my introduction into clip-less riding. I like them a lot. They are very affordable and there is a mechanism that allows you to adjust the amount of resistance you get when unclipping. They aren't as wide and as light as the 105 pedals, which are much better in my opinion. But for the price these are great if you want to try riding clip-less.
