Excellent value
4Typical Shimano quality. Outstanding performance at such an affordable price. Would give 5 stars except the bottom of the pedal underneath the cleat is made of plastic (instead of medal, like in higher-end models). This makes that piece slightly less durable and could need replacing after several thousand K. But at this price, a small piece replacement is no big deal.

Good pedals
5I have more than 20 000 km on a pair I bought 5 years ago on probikekit. I did not serviced them. I am more than satisfied with these. (Meanwhile, on my other bike, I changed 2 sets of more expensive look pedals.

Best Buy
4Shimano's literature reveals that save for the plastic skid plate, these pedals are virtually identical to the much more expensive 105 and Ultegra models. They also weigh virtually the same. The sole significant mechanical difference is that the skid plate on the R540s is plastic, while the 105 and Ultegra models use a metal skid plate. That difference has been irrelevant for me, because the bearings in the SPD-SL pedals have worn out long before the skid plate needs replacement (and they are not replaceable). The R540s cost little more than a set of replacement cleats. For that amount of money, you literally cannot go wrong. Save yourself some money and get these instead.

beginner pedals
3My first pedal so not sure what to compare it to. At the beginning they were wonderful and I use them on a 30KM daily commute. I do notice shoe is a bit loose (can move left right) while engaged which I don't like. Also noticed some clicking noise with the left pedal. Both issues I am trying to resolve by tightening the pedal. Because of all this I would like to know how more expensive Shimano or other styles of pedals behave/perform.

Good Beginner Pedal
3I have been using these for about 3 months with R087 shoes now and as most people these are my first clip less pedals. I am mostly a commuter so I'm not sure what the difference would be to use more expensive Shimano pedals. Overall they have been performing okay I just have two comments. My foot seems to be somewhat loose while clipped in even with tightened tension (I'm at about 50% tension) and second thing which is annoying is that the left pedal is creating this clicking noise for the second time. First time I was able to fix it by tightening the pedal a bit. So these things have me wondering if I should try the more expensive pedal next time around hoping for a more quality.

Nice starter
4The R540's are a very basic looking pedal that does the right job for a road/commuter bike. Depending on the cleats you can buy (extras sold separately) you can choose more or less float

I really like shimano pedals, I have r540 that i bought first, going from SPD to a platform that does not point press in the middle of the foot: I put more than 15 000 km without any meticulous maintenance.
Plastic and metal are scuffed from 4 pairs of cleats, but I still prefer them on my commuter bike.

OK...but buy elsewhere

At €50 for a set of 'beginner pedals'...look elsewhere.
I had me a set (Boxed incl cleats) for £30 from another online retailer. In all honestly I'd be better spending the extra €17 for 105 model. I already have 6700 on my 'best' bike...and have no issues with them.
The 540's are a bit heavy, don't click in as well, tension is adjustable, but for some reason I don't feel as secure. Seems to be more float in the cheaper version (SH 11 cleats fitted on both shoes). Maybe that's the difference...beginner's bail out option???
Still they'll do for over the winter, no sense ruining more expensive pedals...cos it's gonna be a wet one...
