nice change of crank
My bike came with a standard (53/39) crankset. I wanted to improve my climbing ability by going to the compact crank with its 34t small ring, plus compress the top-end gearing down a little to make the shifts closer together and help me raise my cadence for a given gear at the speeds I normally ride. This Shimano Tiagra crankset has been just perfect for me. It's approximately the same weight as the 10-year old Ultegra 6500 crank that I swapped out for it, it was dirt cheap, and it shifts beautifully. I couldn't be more pleased by the new gearing, both at the low end on climbs, and at my normal cruising speed where I have slightly closer shifts. I'm very happy with this crankset. Sure, it could be lighter, but you pay for lighter, and this Tiagra set was dirt cheap. If you're looking to swap a standard crank for a compact crank, and you don't want to pay very much for it, this crankset should be right up your alley. Note: it didn't come with a bottom bracket. I had to order a Shimano Hollowtech II bottom bracket separately, but they're pretty cheap too.
