Garmin 500

4

Bought this for my wifes new bike. She loves downloading her rides and seeing what she's done. She is gradually learning more of the functions. Almost bought the 510 but decided on the 500 after reading a few negative reviews on the 510. Well worth the money and great service from PBK

Neat, self-contained GPS computer with excellent downloadable ride info

4

The best bit is the range of information on offer here and the fact that it’s fully customisable. You get all the basic speed and distance measurements that you’d expect along with gradient, total ascent/descent, lap times and averages… you get the idea. Plus, if you go for the speed/cadence sensor you get more information there, and if you use a heart rate strap you can view the measurements in a variety of different ways. It’ll link up with ANT+ power-measuring equipment too, which is a massive bonus if you train by wattage. -road.cc

Great product

5

This a great product in a small, lightweight package. Three pages of data (choose from over 40 fields) with up to eight lots of data per page. Great online and offline collation through Garmin connect and Garmin training center. Can upload straight to other online sources such as Strava. Rechargeable battery lasts for ages on one charge. Definitely recommend!

Too unreliable and not worth the money

2

Contrary to most other reviews I have read i seem to have had nothing but poor service from the Edge 500. Battery life is poor, it often displays the wrong date and distance when I download a trip, the heart rate feature stopped working and there have been numerous other malfunctions. I don't have any faith in it and would not recommend it to others

By far the best compact cycling computer available

4

Ample features, all the data you could ever need, all of it recorded neatly in a nice small and light package.

I love that it works easily with Strava, and the training center from Garmin is great too.

Unlike some other brands, the Edge is the industry standard, and they also do not use special incompatible frequencies with their accessories, hence you can use your garmin with any ant+ accessories you want, and are not limited to that manufacturer.

Only reason I am not giving 5 stars is it almost stopped working when I updated it using my mac! But the issue was quickly resolved using google.

Good piece of kit

4

I have previously ran an Edge 705, but decided to change over to the 500 to free up some space on the stem.
Another top piece of kit from Garmin, especially when coupled with a web based training software to track your progress.
The 500 captures plenty of data and is very easy to use, especially when moving.
Highly recommended!

The most usless piece & unrealiable piece of kit I have ever bought

1

Have had 5 Garmin 500 units in as many months. All have failed.
Common fault; When you press stop the unit continues to show speed & clock up distance. When you contact garmin support they say you need an upgrage (Even though it is brand new!) they take you through, step by step to up grade via your PC & their web site. The unit then verifies their upgrade & burns out. I had this happen twice. They then sent me a unit with the latest upgrade. When I turned it on it displayed, verifing up grade, then burnt out.
4 out of the 5 units have never been near a bike & fail straight out of the box.
Awaiting yet another replacement from Garmin.
Summary. Garmin 500 usles. PBK good, & have offered a full refund.

Great piece of kit

5

Having been a Polar CS200 user for around 4 yrs,I had to see what all the fuss was about with the Garmin Edge 500. Basically, this device has done to cycle computers what the iPhone has done to mobile phones...for good reason. It's fantastic. Being an avid cyclist for over 16yrs,this has to be one of the best products to date. The ability to customize not one,but three screens, and ease at which to do so is great. The H/R strap is the extremely comfortable, and easily washable.Plug it into your PC,download the data and check it against your mates data is plenty of fun. My preference is to use Strava for this,as I find it very user friendly

Happy I made the change to Garmin

5

I've always been a Polar cycle computer user and was a bit hesitant about making the change to Garmin but I had heard great things. The edge 500 provides so much data (only if you need it), altitude, temperature as well as heart rate, cadence etc. Its user friendly and great USB battery charging. Recommend!

A must have for every cyclist

5

There are some things in cycling that make a huge difference in performance (wheels, tires, etc.), I would add the Garmin 500 to the list. This product takes the usefulness of HR, cadence, speed, and elevation to a whole new level by allowing you to review your ride on Garmin connect. You can also create workouts to add some spice to your indoor training over the winter months. This is a must have!!
