Style and performance (at a price)

I purchased the Espresso Due a few weeks ago - Castelli's sizing just seems spot on for me. I have previously owned a Rapha classic softshell and loved the material, but the fit was not for me. This has a proper racing cut without being too fitted, there is enough room to wear a single base layer or an added jersey for really cold conditions.

So far I have ridden on a sunny ride of 3-6 degrees, and a rain soaked day of 2-3 degrees. On the sunnier ride it was remarkable breathable, the vents on the chest were a bonus but the main zip provided enough ventilation of the climbs. On the descents it kept out all traces of cold air (as you would expect for Gore Windstopper material).

The bigger revaluation was the wet cold ride. After 2 solid hours of heavy rain the material eventually gave out and let rain through, but only on the shoulders. However, the jacket kept me warm at all times despite the average temperature of 2.5 degrees.

The jacket has some nice design touches. The zip-up cuffs allow air in if left open, or a snug fit it closed. There is a pocket on the front with full loop holes for your iPhone etc if required, although the size of that is more suited to a smaller iPod. The red pockets are easily accessed with winter gloves on, although an added zipped pocket would have been nice.

The only issue with this jacket is of course the price. On sale it is a worthwhile purchase if you prefer a single do-it-all jacket for winter, rather than several layers. It seems like it will be robust enough to last too - I fell off on my first ride and thankfully it was completely unmarked!
