Santini’s Giro d’Italia Capsule Collection: the Inspiration behind the Designs

Santini capsule collection

Santini has been the kit provider for the Giro d’Italia for over two decades. Alongside the signature Maglia Rosa and the leader’s jerseys of the Tour, Santini is also launching a Capsule Collection that pays homage to the four most iconic stages of this year’s Centenary edition of the Giro d’Italia. In addition, Santini has created one other jersey to add to the collection to represent the black Maglia Nera jersey which was presented to the last-ranked rider in the classification until 1951. The milestone stages of the race that these jerseys represent are: Sardinia, the Apennine stage, Rovetta – Bormio and Monza – Milan.

The Technical Aspects of the Jerseys

The four iconic stage jerseys are slim fit, hugging the body without restricting movement. The front and sides of the jerseys are made from Think Opaco fabric which is light and breathable, and stretch Cyber Rider is used for the back of the jerseys. This gives an unparalleled comfort and freedom of movement. The sleeves are raw-cut Bodyfit and the bottom hem of the jersey has a silicon elastic gripper to stop the jersey from riding up.

The Collection:

    Sardinia Jersey

This jersey is dedicated to where the Giro kicks off in 2017: Sardinia.

The jersey has a Sardinian connection as a whole. It’s been designed in the colours of the Mediterranean Sea, interwoven with traditional Sardinian lapwing, and the names of the towns hosting the finish lines of the three stages in Sardinia are displayed just above the lapwing. The region’s flag flutters on the back of the jersey as well, with the sleeves being decorated with a pattern inspired by traditional Sardinian rug motifs and the collar featuring the “L’isola infinita” (Eternal Island) script in a reference to the longevity of Sardinians.

    Bartali Stage Jersey (Stage 11)

The 11th stage of the Giro takes the professional peloton on a challenging ride through the Apennines from the Ponte a Ema in Florence which was the birthplace of Gino Bartali; the legend who won the Giro d’Italia 3 times and took the King of the Mountains jersey on no less than 7 occasions.

This stage jersey does not only celebrate Bartali’s achievements with yellow and blue colours to represent those that cropped up most frequently in his cycling career. It also celebrates his resistance work in World War II with his name displayed across the chest of the jersey, topped by mountains crafted out of letters as he secretly carried letters during the War.

The features on the back of the jersey feature the statement:

Il bene si fa ma non si dice. E certe medaglie si appendono all’anima, non alla giacca.

You do good but you don’t talk about it. And some medals are pinned on the heart, not the jacket.

    Cima Coppi Jersey

This jersey celebrates the highest peak in the race: the Stelvio. Stelvio Pass stands at 2,757 metres, where the peloton will tackle the climb during stage 16 from Rovetta to Bormio stage.

    Santini Coppi Jersey

There are several pieces of writing on this jersey. “W COPPI” are the words printed on the front of the jersey, in the same way as they appeared on the roads during the race and to pay homage to this champion, his nickname is printed on the inside collar as “Il Grande” (The Great One). There is also the swirling interlocking zeros logo that has been chosen to represent the 2017 Giro d’Italia’s “Amore Infinito” slogan on both sleeves, alongside the words “Bormia” and “Rovetta” on the right and left respectively to represent the finishes of the stage.

    Final Stage Jersey

The Final stage jersey dedicates to the 21st stage of the Giro d’Italia 2017 with the classic pinks and golds used on the Maglia Rosa Winner’s Jersey. The riders go from the Monza Circuit to the Duomo in Milan – both areas are represented on the jersey in writing across the chest of the jersey.

    Santini capsule collection

During the first edition of the race, an article titled “L’onda Invincibile” (Invincible Wave) appeared in the La Gazzetta dello Sport. These words are featured on the back of this jersey to pay homage to the first edition on the race’s 100th anniversary this year.

    The Maglia Nera Jersey

Between 1946 and 1951, the lowest ranked cyclist in the classification of the Giro d’italia were awarded the Maglia Nera, the Black Jersey. This jersey used to be a competitive win, with cyclists going as far as to puncture their own tyres just to win the jersey!

    Santini Maglia Nera

The Santini Maglia Nera pays homage to this historic jersey of the Tour, completing the Capsule Collection.

I'm a runner at heart but since shin splints became a big part of my life, I turned to cycling as a form of cross training. I love riding track and am a regular on the Manchester velodrome; on the road I ride a Trek Lexa and I call it Toby.
